Galveston County has the following 11 Hospitals: Chimney Marine Hospital, Danforth Memorial Hospital, Devereux Texas Treatment Network, Galveston County Memorial Hospital, Jennie Sealy Hospital, John Sealy Hospital, Mainland Center Hospital, Marys Hospital, Shriners Hospital, TDC Hospital, and The University of Texas Medical Branch.
Shriners Burns Hospital opened its 30-bed facility and eight-story building in March 1992. This research and treatment was the first of three burns facilities in the country funded by the Shriners of North America. Children with severe burns are flown from around the world to Galveston Island for specialized treatment.
The University of Texas Medical Branch was opened in 1891. Its main campus form of 85-acres and includes a complex of six hospitals, four academic schools, numerous research centers and institutes, and one of the largest medical libraries in the Southwest. More than 12,000 faculty and staff work at UTMB’s main campus and its network of community-based clinics. Last year, there were more than 37,000 admissions to UTMB hospitals, nearly 764,000 outpatient visits, and almost 71,000 emergency room visits.
The UTMB School of Medicine has graduated nearly 12,000 physicians since enrolling its first class in 1891. Program and health care services offered at The University of Texas Medical Branch are the following: Center for Weight Management, Cosmetic Surgery, Family Centered, Maternity Care, Family Medicine, Geriatric Services, Harborside Medical Group, HeartCenter, Pediatric Associates, Stark Diabetes Center, Wellness Continuum, and Women's HealthCare Group.
